Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel first met as MFA students at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1973. Over the next thirty years, their artistic partnership produced an impressive body of work as well as a lifelong friendship. Together they created twenty photographic projects, two publications (including the landmark bookEvidence), numerous exhibitions, the filmJPL, and seven public art commissions.
From 1973 until 1989, Mandel and Sultan worked together on open ended, allusive designs for outdoor advertising billboards under the name Clatworthy Colorvues. These billboards were displayed on more than one hundred sites throughout California and the continental United States.
