Open-Editions at Texas Contemporary
OPEN-EDITIONS popped up in Houston for the Texas Contemporary art fair October 1st-4th. We brought a selection of artist-designed goods from San Francisco to share with visitors to the art fair, and collaborated with Art Market Productions, curator Leslie Moody Castro and artist Emilio Chapella to create a series of maps celebrating TX Contemporary's highlight on Mexico DF galleries and arts organizations featured at the fair.
The Invisible City maps grew out of a dialogue with artist Emilio Chapella, exploring the topology of the street grid embossed as a footprint of the city along with points of interest in the arts. The maps of Houston and Mexico city measure 18" x 24" and are available here for $12 each.
Philadelphia based artist Tim Eads sent a big box of his screen printed weekender totes, which was well received by the staff of Houston-based arts center DiverseWorks
Sarah Ward's Tablets provided much needed seating after four days on the concrete, and we were thrilled that a customer decided to keep the three pieces we brought together.
The range of work presented at Texas Contemporary was diverse and of high quality, and the 60+ galleries came from around the US. We especially enjoyed the exquisite Japanese Baskets from TAI Modern, Andrew Stevovich's paintings at Adelson Galleries, and Jason Middlebrook's superb slab at Morgan Lehmen. The five galleries showcased from Mexico DF stole the show with works including this sub-floor universe by Miguel Angel Madrigal shown by Galeria Enrique Guerrero, this CMU block wall with inset mirror panels at MARSO by artist Karyn Olivier
One of our favorite parts of participating in art fairs is the process of installing and de-installing amid the bustle of the other galleries and site specific works. We loved watching Jay Shinn unfold this beautiful mural in video and paint (above, courtesy of Barbara Davis Gallery). This was our first visit to Houston, and we were delighted by the warm reception, inspired conversations with local artists and collectors, and excellent BBQ. Thank you Houston and Art Market Productions- we look forward to seeing you next year!
